Orlando is home to a variety of exciting theme parks: four Walt Disney World Resort theme parks, three Universal Orlando Resort theme parks, and SeaWorld Orlando.

So how do you choose which theme park is right for you?

Fitting them all into one vacation can be tricky. Some frequent theme park-goers are experts at “park hopping,” or visiting multiple parks in a single day (which, FYI, often requires a ticket upgrade).

As a first-time theme park visitor, we recommend you take the time to slow down and savor your experience one park at a time.

Walt Disney World Theme Parks

Magic Kingdom

Tickets, Reservations & Planning Ahead

Buying theme park tickets can seem complicated, but you can alleviate confusion by knowing what to look for ahead of time.

There are several different kinds of tickets: single day, park-to-park, and multi-day.

Single day tickets offer admission to one individual theme park per day.

Park-to-park, or park-hopping tickets, allow you to go from one theme park to another (or multiple others) in one day.

Multi-day tickets offer discounts or other incentives to purchase tickets for admission over multiple and often consecutive days.

In the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, some theme parks required reservations to manage crowd sizes. Now, however, reservations are not needed. Instead, you’ll purchase date-specific tickets. If it’s an exceptionally busy day for Disney theme parks, you may find that they cut off ticket sales for a specific date.

The one exception is for annual passholders, who still need to make a reservation on the date they intend to visit a Disney park.

Universal theme parks and SeaWorld Orlando do not require reservations, either.

Save money on theme park tickets by purchasing in advance, visiting during off-peak seasons and dates, and looking for military, AAA, and student discounted rates.

What to Expect When You Arrive

You have your tickets, and now it’s time to experience the magic of Orlando’s theme parks!

If you’re driving, anticipate paying a parking fee. Save yourself an extra $35 (minimum) by taking a shuttle (check out Rosen Plaza’s complimentary shuttle schedule to select theme parks.)

Pro tip: if you’re parking, take a photo of your parking spot so you can quickly relocate your vehicle at the end of a long day of fun.

Every theme park has a security check, where you’ll walk through metal detectors and have your bag inspected. To avoid any issues, be sure you check out Disney, Universal, and SeaWorld bag policies ahead of time.

Once you’ve scanned your tickets, use the My Disney Experience, Universal Orlando Resort, or SeaWorld Orlando app to guide you through the parks, place mobile orders for food, and check attraction wait times.

How to Plan Your Day

One of the best strategies to ensure you make the most of your day at the theme parks is to arrive early.

Beat the crowds (and often the heat) by getting to the park when they open. You’ll usually have shorter wait times for the more popular attractions, saving you time later in the day.

Even if you “rope drop,” or show up as soon as the park opens, expect lines throughout your visit. Orlando’s theme parks are some of the most popular in the world for good reason.

While plenty of people wait in line for attractions the good ol’ fashioned way, if you’re willing to spend a little (or a lot) more money, you can take advantage of express passes.

Disney’s Lightning Lanes offer expedited queues for some of their most popular attractions. Universal has Express Passes, and SeaWorld Orlando has Quick Queue passes.

It’s worth noting that these passes don’t allow you to “skip the line,” but rather provide access to a smaller queue with a shorter wait time.

If you’re traveling alone or don’t mind being separated from your party, use Solo Rider lines on select attractions to skip lengthy wait times. You’ll fill in an empty seat on a ride and be rewarded with faster access to the excitement.

If you’re planning on staying late to catch an evening show or fireworks display, make sure you pace your day properly. Stay hydrated and rest your feet by taking in a performance or finding a shady spot to sit and watch a parade. Make sure you’re eating, too. A full day at a theme park is a marathon, not a sprint.

One of the best things you can do for a successful day at the theme parks is to be flexible. Plans may change, rides may shut down, and unforeseen weather may dampen your expectations.

Before you begin your day, make a list of your must-do attractions and prioritize them. Hopefully, you’ll cross everything off your list and ultimately avoid the disappointment of missing something you were really looking forward to.

Also, as tempting as it may be, don’t try to squeeze everything into one day. You’ll have a much better time enjoying every moment if you give yourself breathing room and time to rest.

What to Pack

There are a handful of essentials you’ll want to pack regardless of what time of year you visit.

Sunscreen, water bottles, portable chargers, and comfortable shoes are all musts when it comes to spending a day at the theme parks.

You’ll also want to take the weather into consideration. Summers in Orlando can be brutally hot, and you may want to pack a portable fan or an anti-chafing stick for a more pleasant visit.

Additionally, in the summer, Orlando sees heavy (though usually brief) thunderstorms almost daily. A poncho is always a great idea (and a pair of dry socks, too).

In the winter, temperatures in Central Florida can dip, so a light jacket or sweatshirt comes in handy.

Eating & Drinking in the Parks

So many delicious treats await in every one of Orlando’s theme parks.

Throughout the parks, you’ll find a mix of quick-service and table service dining.

At quick-service restaurants, you’ll order and pay at a counter. Seating is first-come, first-serve, or you can take your food with you on the go.

Table service dining is slightly more formal and often requires advance reservations due to popularity.

Spend less time waiting in line for food by mobile ordering through each theme park app on your phone.

While delicious, theme park food isn’t the most cost-effective. If you’re traveling on a budget, plan ahead and pack your own snacks and water bottles.

Pro tip: be careful not to get so caught up in your day of fun that you forget to eat or drink. Between the copious amount of walking you’ll be doing and the Florida heat, exhaustion can catch up with you quickly.
