ORLANDO (March 21, 2013) – While Rosen Hotels & Resorts prides itself on practicing green initiatives 24 hours a day with little fanfare or promotion, the company will be highlighting one of those hours this Saturday during the national Earth Hour celebration to help educate hotel guests about the importance of living as eco-friendly as possible.

Earth Hour is a global environmental initiative in partnership with WWF (World Wildlife Fund) in which individuals, businesses, governments and communities are invited to turn out their lights for one hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday March 23, 2013 to show their support for environmentally sustainable action.

The seven Orlando Rosen Hotels & Resorts properties will be turning off all non-essential interior and exterior lighting to include the rose garden and fountains at Rosen Shingle Creek, Rosen Centre and Rosen Plaza. In addition, special activities such as candlelit dinners and glow drinks for guests will be served in hotel restaurants.

Rosen Hotels & Resorts and its seven Orlando hotels will be joining hundreds of millions of participants in more than 7,000 cities and towns, in 152 countries and territories, and across seven continents in showing support for the importance of sustainable action around the world.

Rosen Hotels & Resorts’ three Orlando convention properties, the 800-room Rosen Plaza, 1334-room Rosen Centre and 1500-room Rosen Shingle Creek, were each designated Two Palm Green Lodges in 2009 under the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)’s Florida Green Lodging Program. Launched in March 2004, the Florida Green Lodging Program establishes environmental guidelines for hotels to conserve natural resources and prevent pollution.

ORLANDO (March 1, 2013) — Rosen Hotels & Resorts celebrated a milestone today as it announced plans to build a new skybridge connecting Rosen Plaza, its 800-room convention hotel, with the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) West Building. The pedestrian skybridge will be named the Gary Sain Memorial Bridge, in honor of the previous Visit Orlando President & CEO who passed away in May 2012. Sain had led the region’s main tourism-marketing agency since 2007, bringing about reorganization, a new vision and a name change to what had for years been called the Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau, or Orlando CVB.

Construction of the $3 million bridge will be entirely funded by Rosen Hotels & Resorts, completing the final link in connecting OCCC with adjacent International Drive hotels. Rosen Plaza’s sister property, Rosen Centre, installed an aerial walkway for pedestrians in March 2011. The bridges are designed to provide meetings attendees with a safe, weather-proof and traffic-free “commute” from their guestroom to the convention center.

Rather than breaking ground for the aerial project, the plans for the skybridge were announced with a cake cutting ceremony attended by Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, current Visit Orlando President & CEO George Aguel, and Harris Rosen, President and COO, Rosen Hotels & Resorts. They, along with other Orlando tourism industry leaders, used shovels to “dig” into an oversized cake featuring a chocolate bridge connecting Rosen Plaza with the OCCC.

“I am honored to dedicate this project to my friend and colleague, Gary Sain,” said Rosen. “It is entirely fitting that this pedestrian skybridge named in his honor will be used to benefit thousands of visitors to Orlando, a destination he worked tirelessly to build and strengthen during his time with us. Rest assured, Gary’s legacy continues here today.”

The new skybridge comes on the heels of other recent improvements at Rosen Plaza. In fall 2012, the hotel completed a floor-to-ceiling renovation of all 800 guest rooms. Sleeping areas were outfitted with new amenities including 32″ flat-screen TVs, mini-refrigerators and 17″ lap-top sized safes, as well as new granite-topped dressers and nightstands, and new bedding and curtains. Bathrooms were redesigned for a spa-like feel with tiled showers and tubs with mosaic glass tile accents and granite-topped vanities. The hotel’s 16 hospitality suites—the Executive, Plaza and new Junior suites—were redesigned to offer more flexible seating and updated for a crisp, contemporary feel. Carpet in all guestrooms, suites and hallways was replaced with the latest in eco-friendly technology. KISSIMMEE, Fla. (December 18, 2012) – Orlando hotelier and recognized philanthropist Harris Rosen, president of Rosen Hotels & Resorts, has donated $1 million to Give Kids The World (GKTW) towards the construction of 64 new villas which will accommodate more children with life-threatening illnesses and their families visiting the nonprofit resort for a once-in-a-lifetime dream vacation. The donation, which was made through the Harris Rosen Foundation, will go towards GKTW’s $40 million Capital Expansion and Improvement project, which is part of a larger $120 million, four-year Village Campaign.

“Give Kids The World got an early Christmas present this week when I received a phone call that all non-profits dream of getting,” said GKTW President Pamela Landwirth. “Mr. Rosen’s incredible gift not only jump-starts the fundraising for our new villas, but also provides the inspiration to hope for many more generous gifts in support of our campaign.”

Rosen is a widely recognized and respected hotelier, community builder, father and philanthropist who founded Rosen Hotels & Resorts in 1974 before donating 25 acres of land and $10 million to the University of Central Florida in 2002 to develop the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at UCF. Students from Rosen College volunteer regularly at GKTW, following their founder’s mantra of giving back to the community. Rosen has a long history of giving to those in need, particularly children.

“I realize what an incredibly fortunate individual I am because I have been able to achieve so much more than I ever imagined, and now I have an opportunity to give back, something I have always wanted to do,” said Rosen. “My hope is that others in my position will recognize their duty to engage in what I refer to as ‘responsible capitalism’ and to use their success and wealth to benefit others, simply because it’s the right thing to do.”

Every year, GKTW welcomes more than 7,000 families from around the world for a weeklong, cost-free vacation complete with accommodations in whimsical villas, meals, donated attractions tickets, nightly entertainment and more. However, with only 140 villas on the 70-acre resort, nearly 500 of those families must stay off-site at nearby hotels. Rosen’s gift will allow more children and their families the opportunity to experience the magic of staying at the whimsical Village where ice cream is served for breakfast, Christmas comes once a week and 6-foot-tall bunny rabbits named Mayor Clayton and Ms. Merry tuck the children in at night.

Today, Rosen had the opportunity to meet one of the families who will be helped because of his gift. The Vandiver Family from Pelham, Ala., is staying at Give Kids The World Village this week as part of 4-year-old Abigail’s wish to visit Walt Disney World. Diagnosed with cancer at seven months old, “Abby” has been cancer-free for three and half years. Rosen shared in the family’s fun this morning by indulging in ice cream for breakfast – a tradition a Give Kids The World Village – with Abby and siblings Patrick, 10, and Sarah, 7. Afterwards, he joined the children for a ride on the Village’s Enchanted Carousel.

Watching her children’s faces light up with joy as the carousel spun around, Abby’s mother, Amy, remarked, “I stay at home with the children and my husband is a police officer so being [at Give Kids The World Village] is something we could never have afforded on our own. It is truly the vacation of a lifetime.”
